May 27, 2008 PRESS RELEASE SPRING IS BLOOMING IN DEDHAM Friends of Dedham Civic Pride and volunteers spent Tuesday, May 20th, planting over 60 pots that beautify Dedham with spring, summer, and fall flowers in Dedham, Oakdale, and East Dedham Squares. Preparation and planting of the pots takes a great deal of effort by a small group of volunteers. The pots are delivered to the site and cleaned, the soil is prepared, the pots are then planted and fertilized, and finally carted off to their seasonal locations. Friends sponsors two “Pots” programs. Friends funds the “Town Pots” and local merchants fund the “Blooms” pots. Friends and the DPW water the pots and Friends maintains the pots throughout the season. Friends of Dedham Civic Pride thanks member Tony Freitas for retrofitting the pots to be self-watering, and Friends Maryanne Hawkins and Jean Schoener for coordinating the “Blooms” and “Town Pots” programs. Special thanks to Isaac Blair & Co., Inc., Division of The Marr Companies, for storing and transporting the pots and Mabel Herweg for letting Friends use her driveway to plant the pots! This year’s volunteers included Bill Call, Jane Cheever, Dolly Capozzi, Annette Christ, Elena Derber, Tony Freitas, Henri Gough, Maryanne Hawkins, Sue Hicks, Mickey Lessard, Maureen O’Brien, Helen Sayers, and Jean Schoener. See the list of Pots Sponsors on Dedham Civic Pride’s website at dedhamcivicpride.org under “Supporters.” To Sponsor a Pot, please contact Maryanne Hawkins at 781-329-5685. Avery Oak Banner Debuts This Fall Dedham Civic Pride brought another historical banner to East Dedham and Dedham Squares. The new Fall banner features Dedham's 'Avery Oak' Tree. The 'Avery Oak', an ancient tree measuring 16 feet in circumference, once stood on East Street on the property of Dr. William Avery, who came to Dedham in 1650 with his wife and three children. When he moved to Boston in 1680, he gifted the “Avery School” to Dedham. The owners rejected an offer of $70 for its timber from the builders of “Old Ironsides." Our forefathers viewed the tree as a symbol of the vigor and virtue of colonial character. The Hurricane of 1938 knocked down the “Avery Oak. There is a plaque marking the site that once held the mighty 'Avery Oak.' Today, the Dedham Town Meeting Moderator's gavel includes wood from the tree. The 'Avery Oak' appears on the Dedham Town Seal and Dedham Town Flag. The design for the banner was supported in part by a grant from the Dedham Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. |

What we learned at our DCP meeting! Did you know the Town of Dedham pays for trash collection by weight? That means if you leave your trash containers uncovered and it rains, Dedham is paying more to dispose of the rain in your trash. Save money for other town projects and cover your trash! |
